U.S. Senate Majority Leader spoke after the chamber voted to acquit Donald Trump of the charge of incitement of insurrection against him in one article of impeachment on Saturday and blasted the 43 Republicans who voted to find the former president not guilty.

Seven Republicans joined Democrats to find Trump guilty, but as a two-thirds majority of senators present are needed in an impeachment trial to convict, Trump was acquitted.

Schumer said the vote was about "choosing country over Donald Trump" and the 43 GOP members instead chose Trump.

"The vast majority of the Senate Republican caucus, including the Republican leader, voted to acquit former President Trump, signing their names in the columns of history alongside his name forever," Schumer said, adding that the "failure" to convict Trump for the charge of incitement of insurrection would "live in infamy" in the history of the Senate.
