The House of Representatives continued with its impeachment case Thursday, which claimed former U.S. president Donald Trump incited an insurrection on the Capitol, with Trump’s lawyers set to launch their defence by week’s end.
The House has charged Trump, a Republican, with inciting an insurrection by exhorting thousands of supporters to march on the Capitol on Jan. 6, the day Congress gathered to certify Democrat Joe Biden's election win.
On Thursday lead House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said that Trump "sent a clear message to supporters. He encouraged planning and conspiracies to his supporters to take over capitol buildings and threatened public officials who threatened to bow down to his political will." Raskin added that Trump knew his most extreme supporters would show up in Washington "ready to fight like Hell for their hero."
Colorado Rep. Diana Degette spoke about Capitol rioter and Trump supporter Jacob Chansley, who was captured in numerous photos and videos wearing a horned-hat with fur. Degette said Chansley has since said during his arrest interrogations that he has felt "duped" by the president and wouldn't have done any of the things he did that day had Trump told them not to.
Democrats face a difficult task in securing a Senate conviction and barring Trump from ever again seeking public office. A two-thirds majority in the Senate must vote to convict, which means at least 17 Republicans would have to defy Trump and his continued popularity among Republican voters.
It appears unlikely that the House prosecutors will call witnesses, and Trump has declined a request to testify.
