Opening arguments have begun in the criminal trial against former U.S. president Donald Trump, centred around alleged hush money payments made to an adult film star prior to the 2016 presidential election.

It is the first criminal trial against a former American president in U.S. history and one of four indictments that were filed against Trump in 2023.
