Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke on Friday about the reported death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison, calling him an “extraordinary fighter for human rights, for democracy and someone who was standing up for the Russian people — standing up with extraordinary courage for a better future for Russia and for Russians.”

“Reports of Alexei Navalny’s death are tragic and horrifying. An unwavering advocate for Russian democracy and freedom, his courage was unparalleled. To be clear: He should never have been imprisoned to begin with,” Trudeau remarked earlier on X.
