Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau toured parts of the Montreal region on Thursday to see the damage an ice storm had caused as it moved through the province as well as parts of Ontario on Wednesday and said that while a formal request for assistance had not been made yet, the federal government would respond as soon as it is asked.

More than one million homes and businesses had been left without power from the storm, which also impacted parts of Ontario and has now moved into the Maritimes.

"Just seeing all these beautiful trees down, seeing these lives disrupted, seeing the challenges I know people are going to be facing today and for what will be a difficult Easter weekend for a number of families," he told reporters. "Obviously there's never a good time for this but it's a moment when we pull together and try and be there for each other."

Trudeau also encouraged people to help each other where they can, saying it's moments like this where people step up and help, but added that residents should not take unnecessary risks.
