Trudeau says "no one should be vacationing abroad" amid pandemic, sickness benefit not for travel

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about MPs and other Canadian politicians travelling abroad for non-essential reasons during the pandemic, stressing that "no one should be vacationing abroad" right now. He also spoke about the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, saying it was for people who needed sick leave if they needed it and it's not provided by their employer, and was not for travellers quarantining "after a holiday."

Asked about members of his own Liberal caucus travelling, Trudeau said he was disappointed they had travelled and there were consequences with them losing their committee responsibilities, with one MP stepping down from their parliamentary secretary role. He said they need to continue looking out for each other, saying that the actions of one person can have a positive or negative impact on others.

In response to a question from Global News about snowbirds travelling to the U.S. to get the COVID-19 vaccine, Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canadians are still advised to stay home and not travel out of the country. He said there would not be any mass repatriation like what was seen in March for anyone stuck abroad, even if to get the vaccine.
