Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday he was excited about the “fresh energy” of his new cabinet after a major shakeup that saw several ministers removed from their roles and seven new Liberal MPs added to cabinet.
The new Liberals MPs entering cabinet are Jenna Sudds, Rechie Valdez, Ya’ara Saks, Arif Virani, Gary Anandasangaree, Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Terry Beech.
“Having a renewed team with a range of new voices and new skills and experience, new challenges for our strongest ministers … I’m excited about this team and I’m excited about the work we’re going to be able to do together,” he said.
Trudeau declined to state specifically why he chosen to remove several ministers from cabinet; including Marco Mendicino as public safety minister, David Lametti as justice minister and Mona Fortier as Treasury Board head.
Mendicino, who had been under fire for months over his office’s handling of the transfer of notorious serial killer Paul Bernardo, has said he intends to remain MP for Eglinton-Lawrence.
