Trudeau: It's not the job of the PM, Minister of Defence to personally investigate allegations

Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced more tough questions about his office's response to allegations made in 2018 against then-Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Vance.

In response to one of the questions from Conservative Party of Canada Leader Erin O'Toole, Trudeau said that in his view, it was "not for the Prime Minister or the Minister of Defence to investigate allegations."

The Canadian military is facing what experts call an institutional crisis amid twin military police probes into allegations against both the current and former chiefs of the defence staff.

Conservative and NDP critics say the government’s handling amounts to a “cover up,” and repeated those criticisms following Trudeau’s admission that his office was aware an allegation had been made in 2018.

Trudeau said on Tuesday that he condemns in “the strongest terms” intimidation or threats being directed at anyone stepping forward with allegations of harassment or assault – whether it be within the military or elsewhere.
