Cleanup is underway in southern California after tropical storm Hilary soaked several cities, being the first such weather system to hit the state in over eight decades.

The rainfall was so severe it reached as far inland as Las Vegas, while swamping roads and temporarily closing parts of the U.S.’ main interstate highway.

Jackson Proskow reports on California's deluge, the earthquake which shook Los Angeles soon afterwards, and the unexpected upside of the record-breaking rain.
