Californians are bracing for the potential impact of their first tropical cyclone in more than eight decades: Hurricane Hilary.

Hilary is expected to touch down in the Golden State this weekend with wind speeds reaching up to 230 kilometres per hour, and may even pass through western Mexico.

Though the storm is expected to slow down quickly, the World Meteorological Organization says the warming of the sea surface temperature is feeding its strength.
