Justice Minister Brandon Lewis has refused to say whether benefits payments should increase in line with inflation.

Liz Truss this morning was equally evasive, saying she would take a "responsible" approach to public finances.

Some of the country's poorest households will face a real-terms cut to their income if payments do not match inflation.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak had previously promised to peg payments with inflation.
