A Toronto man has pleaded guilty to murder, two years after a Scarborough toddler died and another became seriously ill after eating cereal laced with sodium nitrate.

Francis Ngugi, a friend of the mother of one of the children whose advances she had rejected, admitted in court that he poisoned the children and took full responsibility for what he called a “shameful and selfish act.”

The court heard that in late winter 2021, Ngugi intended for the mother of one of the children to eat the cereal and become sick.
