Tens of thousands of protesters rallied across the United States in support of women's rights and access to abortion after the state of Texas passed the most restrictive law in the country. The US Supreme Court is about to start a new term in which it will consider the future of abortion. Conservatives have a majority in the court, following appointments made by former president Donald Trump. Activists fear justices will uphold a new law making abortion effectively illegal in Texas, and that other states could also restrict the procedure.
Thousands flocked to Washington in the first Women's March of President Joe Biden's administration.
Heading straight to the steps of the US Supreme Court protesters demanded continued access to abortion.
The demonstration took place ahead of the start of a new term for the high court that will decide the future of abortion rights.
The pro-choice rallies held across the US on Saturday were sparked by the so-called Heartbeat Act in Texas. The law severely restricts access to abortion and anybody involved in helping a woman terminate a pregnancy after six weeks can be sued.
Counter-protesters also held rallies, but were heavily outnumbered by people demanding full access to abortion.
Politicians in Republican-led US states are considering similar measures to those introduced in Texas, which has effectively banned most abortions since early September.
