Thousands of Israelis joined staged demonstrations on Saturday for the fifth consecutive week in protest of judicial reform plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
The government launched proposals to weaken the Supreme Court by giving parliament the power to overturn court decisions with a simple majority vote. It also wants to give parliament control over the appointment of judges and reduce the independence of legal advisers. Protesters said the changes will threaten democratic checks and balances on ministers by the courts and accuse Netanyahu of trying to escape a legal case against him. He is on trial for corruption charges which he denies.
"The prime minister, who should be focusing on his trial, is instead focusing on dragging all of Israel into some sort of totalitarian autocracy, all in his service. It's a disgrace, it shall not stand," said Dov Levinglick, a software engineer taking part in the demonstrations.
Netanyahu has dismissed the protests as a refusal by leftist opponents to accept the results of last November's election.
