Thousands of Israelis protested against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Saturday over his alleged corruption and the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many Israelis have accused Netanyahu, whose ministers have quarreled openly about how to deal with the pandemic, of having been slow to respond to the new surge.

The country is set to hold a snap election in March after parliament failed in December to meet a deadline to pass a budget, triggering a ballot presenting new challenges for Netanyahu.

Campaigning in Israel's fourth parliamentary election in two years gets underway with Netanyahu facing public anger over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and while he is engaged in a corruption trial, the first such trial against an Israeli prime minister.

The crowd rallied outside Netanyahu's official residence, blowing whistles, waving signs and flags and calling for his resignation.

With a population of nine million, Israel has reported in its latest figures 426,230 COVID-19 infections and 3,337 deaths.
