Turkey has passed another grim milestone as the death toll from the earthquakes climbs beyond 30,000. It now surpasses the toll from a previous quake there 23 years ago, making it the worst disaster of its kind for more than 8 decades.

When northern Syria is included the total is now more than 37,000. A tragedy on this scale is marked both by countless human losses and escapes.

Increasingly though, attention is switching to getting essential services to the survivors.

Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban reports from the Turkish city of Iskenderun where one refugee says there is no electricity or water.
