Imagine sitting on a hillside, watching as your town is washed away.

That’s the heartbreaking reality for more than 150 people in a little town called Te Karaka, who all took refuge on a hill on Tuesday night as the Waipaoa river burst its banks.

Stranded for 27 hours with no communications, they watched and waited, not knowing if anyone was coming to rescue them.

As food and water ran out, people risked the dangerous waters to find supplies for their families.
