Thailand is reporting a record number of coronavirus cases - more than 15,000 - with no indication the number of infections will let up. The country's health system is unable to cope, and there have been reports of people dying in the streets. In an attempt to curb the pandemic, officials have locked down Bangkok and 12 high-risk provinces. But government resources are stretched and -in many places, completely absent.

The pandemic in Thailand has contributed to more dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, with protesters once again taking to the streets. They risk infection and heavy penalties for ignoring coronavirus restrictions. This month marks one year since the emergence of the biggest challenge to the military establishment, when activists called for democratic reform.
