Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn wrote messages of national unity and love on Tuesday, two days after protesters demanded royal reforms to curb his powers.
The king, accompanied by Queen Suthida, was on a visit to the northeastern province of Udon Thani, where hundreds of supporters turned out to welcome him.
The Royal Palace has made no comment during the months of protests, so any communications from the king are watched carefully in the Southeast Asian country.
During a walkabout with the Queen he wrote messages on the back of portraits of himself. To the governor of Udon Thani province he wrote:
"Thank you for your love and support. We need to care about the country, protect our home with goodness for the country to be happy and wonderful Thai."
But last Sunday thousands of protesters marched to the Grand Palace in Bangkok, demanding change.
Last week the king made his first brief comments on the protesters, saying "we love them all the same" and describing Thailand as a land of compromise.
Former junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha has said he will not resign, rejecting accusations he engineered last year's election to keep power that he seized in a 2014 coup.
