The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident.
This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control - it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani's government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country.
