Taliban bans Afghan female students from universities

Female students in Afghanistan were turned away from university campuses on Wednesday, after the Taliban-run administration said it would suspend women from tertiary education.

After the ban came into effect, groups of women and men staged a protest outside Nangarhar University in Jalalabad. In Kabul, female students expressed shock and sadness with the decision.

“We have an unknown future under this government. It’s like our hopes have been buried, and there is no hope anymore,” said one student. “But I think if we struggle, inshallah (God willing) it may have some positive results.”

The Taliban announced its decision on Tuesday evening in a letter from the higher education ministry to universities, drawing condemnation from foreign governments and the United Nations. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has asked the Taliban-run administration to “immediately” revoke the decision.
