UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim for Syria El-Mostafa Benlamlih on Wednesday described the situation in Syria following Monday’s devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake as a “crisis on top of a crisis.”

Benlamlih said 10.9 million people have been impacted by the quake in Syria, a country already wracked by a 12-year civil war and refugee crisis. He added that the UN World Food Program has only enough food to last one week.

Benlamlih was joined by UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis Muhannad Hadi, who spoke about the efforts to deliver humanitarian aid in the wake of the earthquake. He said the road leading from Gaziantep to the transshipment point at the border between Turkey and Syria was damaged by the earthquake but is expected to reopen in the next day.

“We do have a possibility hopefully to access the border. We’re working with our Turkish counterparts to also give us all the support but I think we have a glimpse of hope there that the road is accessible and we can reach the people,” he said.

The death toll following Monday’s ruinous earthquake had climbed above 11,000 as of Wednesday and is expected to rise further.
