Sweden became the latest country to announce it would seek membership in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), with Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson saying her party had dropped its long-standing opposition to joining the alliance in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Andersson said Sunday that she would seek broad support in parliament for the application, and this comes following internal debates over the past week among leadership of the Social Democratic Party, which has held the largest number of seats in every election in the past century.

"We think this is best for Sweden and Swedish security," she told reporters.
The membership application will result in a tense wait during the months it takes to be ratified by all NATO members, and is already facing a potentially uphill battle as Turkey has voiced its objections.

The alliance and the White House have said they were confident any security concerns could be addressed in the interim.
