Pro-civilian protesters are flocking to the streets of Khartoum to mark the anniversary of the October 1964 uprising that ended the dictatorship of Ibrahim Aboud and to call for the dissolution of the current Sudanese government.
On the one side, supporters of the army are calling for a military-led government to pull the country out of its political and economic slump, while on the other, activists of the 2019 uprising are calling for a complete transfer of power to civilians. A combination of military and civilian leaders have led the country since the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
The situation has heated up since a coup attempt by a group of soldiers on September 22, amid rising tensions between the military and pro-civilian government elements.
