The British evacuation mission has rescued at least 897 people from Sudan, as the country's military agreed to extend the 72-hour ceasefire hours before it was due to end.

The new truce would start at midnight on Thursday local time (11pm UK time), as the White House said it was concerned by ceasefire violations and warned the conflict "could worsen at any moment".
