Students clashed with Turkish police in Istanbul on Monday, angry over President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s appointment of a new rector at one of the country’s top universities. They claim the appointment process was undemocratic.

On Saturday, Erdogan appointed Melih Bulu as rector of Bogazici University in Istanbul.

Turkish media reported that the new administrator is the first chosen from outside a university since a military coup in 1980.
Students and academics are both calling for Bulu’s resignation
