Hundreds of university students clashed with police in Sri Lanka’s commercial capital Colombo on Friday, demanding the release of two student leaders.

President and Minister of Defence Ranil Wickremesinghe imposed a 90-day detention order under the Prevention of Terrorism Act on the Inter-University Students’ Federation Convenor Wasantha Mudalige and the Inter-University Bhikkhus' Federation Convenor Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thero.

The detention order expired on Thursday.

The two convenors played a major role in anti-government protests that led to the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
