State of the Union: Biden promises to "finish the job" of rebuilding economy, uniting nation | FULL

In his second State of the Union address, U.S. President Joe Biden promised he would "finish the job" of rebuilding the economy and uniting the nation as he tried to reassure the country that he continues to deal with inflation and political division.

He began his address talking about the country being a "story of progress and resilience," saying the United States has emerged from a crisis once more and called on Republicans to work with him in order to "rebuild the backbone of America: the middle class." He used legislation passed with bipartisan support in the past two years as proof the new Congress, which has Republicans controlling the House of Representatives, could pass more laws together.

While he did try and strike a tone of collaboration, Biden also discussed GOP efforts to repeal Democrats' 2022 climate change and health care law, as well as their reluctance to increase the federal debt limit, which must be raised later this year or risk default.

Police reform and gun violence were also topics of discussion with Biden noting the presence of the parents of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old Black man who died following an encounter with police. He noted the stark difference of talks Black parents go through compared to his own discussions with his children when they go out, saying Black children are told not to reach for their licence and to put their hands on the wheel should they be pulled over by police. The president did, however, draw bipartisan applause when he praised most law enforcement as "good, decent people," but added more resources are needed and better training needed.

Among the other topics discussed included Russia's war with Ukraine, Medicare, and the recent shootdown of a Chinese spy balloon by a military jet, stressing that it's "never a safe bet to bet against America."
