"Standing with the bullies:" Liberal MP slams Poilievre for silence on trans youth rights

Speaking during question period on Monday, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages Randy Boissonnault slammed Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for her recent controversial policy proposals regarding transgender youth and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre for not speaking up against Smith’s latest remarks.

“The Leader of the Conservative Party claims to talk about freedom. But now he's showing every Canadian exactly the type of leader he is,” Boissonnault said. “He is the one standing with the bullies. He is the one who is picking on vulnerable people, standing with Danielle Smith, instead of defending the most vulnerable youth in our country.”

“Danielle Smith is denying trans kids their basic human rights by denying their access to lifesaving health care. It's not the role of politicians to tell doctors how to treat patients. Meanwhile, this leader of the Conservative Party remains shamefully silent on attacks on trans rights. The hate and prejudice of some should never override the rights of others,” Blake Desjarlais, NDP MP of Edmonton Griesbach, also added.

“I have spent hours on the phone consoling people who are crying on the phone, asking how we can stand up for the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people in Alberta,” Boissonnault concluded in his remarks. “I have one message for Albertans [and] people across the country, legal challenges notwithstanding: The one way we can stop this is to kill the bill before it gets to the legislature. So write to your UCP members; get fired up; mobilize — because kids rights matter."
