Sri Lanka and India’s joint operation to douse the fire onboard the X-Press Pearl container ship continued for a 10th day on Saturday, May 29, off the coast of Colombo as the vessel was at risk of sinking, local media reported.

Marine conservation organizations were also responding to pollution from the fire that reports said posed a threat to ocean life.

A military helicopter had been deployed to drop fire retardant and coast guard ships from the two countries had sprayed it with seawater to bring the blaze under control.

The vessel had left Hazira port in India on May 15 and was on its way to Singapore via Colombo carrying chemicals including 25 tonnes of nitric acid.

It was anchored off Colombo when a container caught fire on Friday (May 21), officials said.
