Authorities in Sri Lanka are trying to head off a potential environmental disaster after a fire-damaged container ship sank off the country’s main port.

The ship was carrying fuel and billions of the tiny plastic pellets used to make shopping bags.

Environmentalists fear the disaster could devastate marine life and further pollute the nation’s famed beaches.

As Redmond Shannon reports, it’s another wake-up call to reduce our plastic output.
