A group of 49 migrants were rescued after travelling on a canoe-shaped open vessel, known as a cayuco, roughly 11 km south off of Gran Canaria in Spain.

The rescued migrants disembarked at Arguineguin's port with the help of the Spanish coast guard.

One of the rescued migrants was transferred to hospital to receive medical treatment.

Spanish emergency service staff followed COVID-19 protocols and gave each person a face mask before leaving the vessel.

The number of undocumented migrants arriving in the Canary Islands jumped eight-fold from 2019 to more than 25,000, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism and other industries in north and sub-Saharan Africa, pushing more to embark on the dangerous journey.
