A fire broke out at a shopping mall in South Korea, leaving at least seven dead and one seriously injured, a local fire station said on Monday.

Chung Ji-sun, the chairman of Hyundai Department Store Group which operates the outlet mall, inspected the scene and apologized.

“I would like to express my deepest condolences and apologies to the bereaved families," Chung said, bowing during a press briefing.

The fire station said the fire began from a basement around 7:45 a.m. local time, before the mall’s business hours.

About 100 people who were staying at a nearby hotel were evacuated and about 120 personnel were mobilized to extinguish the fire, according to the fire station. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
