South Korea has reported its 30th day in a row of triple-digit increases as fears grow the viral spread is getting out of control in the greater Seoul area.
What worries the authorities is that this third wave is more widespread than previous surges and, unless the numbers are curbed, hospital resources could become stretched.
Officials have scrambled to restore restrictions in the capital to include tighter controls on restaurants, indoor gatherings, sporting events and intercity trains and buses.
