A day after it was announced by Lebanese President Michel Aoun, people in the country were optimistic about a U.S.-brokered border deal over the shared maritime boarder with Israel, but expressed doubts about how the agreement would affect their daily lives.
Aoun said Thursday that talks had come to a “positive end” but insisted the agreement did not pave the way for the normalization of its relations with Israel.
It’s a rare agreement between two countries that are bitter enemies. Rights are at stake over exploiting undersea natural gas reserves in areas of the eastern Mediterranean that the two countries – which do not have diplomatic relations – claim as their own.
