The Scottish election has delivered a parliamentary majority in favour of independence.
First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party Nicola Sturgeon said she will use that majority to fight for a second referendum, despite resistance from Boris Johnson's government in Westminster.
The first referendum was defeated in 2014 by a 10-point margin, but then came Brexit, which Scotland opposed by a large margin and has reinvigorated the independence movement.
The election result pits Sturgeon against Johnson in a confrontation that will dominate UK politics, with the future of the United Kingdom at stake.
