Enthusiasts of cold-water swimming opened the winter season in the Siberian city of Omsk on Sunday in the Irtysh River.
Several dozens of Omsk men and women, who call themselves “walruses,” braved icy waters of the local river in freezing temperatures. Many of them believe that cold-water swimming is the most effective way to stay healthy during severely cold Siberian winters.
“It is like a body on the verge of life and death and then after you get out, the body appreciates you with hormones and feelings that you did a great job, and the blood (disperses) from the centre of the body to the limbs,” said Andrei, a cold water swimmer with 12 years of experience.
The average temperature for December in Omsk is -20 degrees Celsius.
