The family of slain American-Palestinian Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh held a press conference on Thursday after meeting with U.S. lawmakers in Washington to demand an independent investigation into her killing.

Abu Akleh was fatally shot by an Israeli sniper in May while reporting on confrontations in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Jenin, according to her family, eyewitnesses and Al Jazeera.

An Israeli investigation into the matter concluded that it wasn’t possible to determine the source of the shot that killed Abu Akleh.

The family representative Diana Buttu, alongside Abu Akleh's brother Tony, her nephew Victor, and her niece Lina called for the U.S. to launch a “timely, independent and thorough investigation” to hold those who killed her accountable.

They said they met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and made their demands clear, but he gave them no promises.

The family was joined by several U.S. House representatives, including André Carson of Indiana, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

They called for an end to Israel’s impunity when it comes to human rights, and for the FBI to conduct its own investigation into the killing of the American citizen.
