One of King Charles's key symbolic roles is heading the Commonwealth of Nations, a voluntary association of 56 independent countries, most of which were formerly under British rule.
But with several of those countries seeking reparations for the United Kingdom's colonial past, some are questioning why the UK's monarchy should preside over a post-colonial institution when imperialism cost the lives of so many and enslaved many times more.
