The Mumbai police has slapped sedition charges against Independent Lok Sabha MP from Amaravati Navneet Kaur Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana, claiming that 'their acts created hateful sentiments in the minds of citizens against the Maharashtra government'. This after the couple had announced that they would be reciting the Hanuman Chalisa outside Matoshree, the private residence of chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, triggering massive protests. They later called off the plan - but now, they've been arrested and charged with sedition. Is such a harsh charge not an over-reach by the state authorities?
