The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., man who killed four people — including three of his own children — before shooting himself on Monday evening faced a previous legal charge, court records obtained by Global News shows.

The recently-identified gunman, Robert Hallaert, was charged in Dec. 2019 for assaulting a local police officer. He received a conditional discharge for the offence and was ordered to keep the peace, not be in possession of any weapons and to seek counselling for alcohol abuse.

Amid their investigation, however, Sault Ste. Marie police found Hallaert was in possession of two firearms.

Though the investigation is still underway, police have described what happened as a tragic case of intimate partner violence and not random acts of violence.
