New York State Police identified the suspect in the stabbing attack of author Salman Rushdie in a news conference on Friday, saying that 24-year-old Hadi Matar was now in police custody.

Police also gave an update of Rushdie's condition, saying he had been stabbed at least once in the neck and the abdomen.

He was taken to hospital and as of 5 p.m. was still undergoing surgery.

A motive is not yet known at this time.

Rushdie’s 1988 book “The Satanic Verses” was banned in Iran, where the late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.

Often-violent protests against Rushdie erupted around the world, including a riot that killed 12 people in Mumbai. Khomeini died that same year.
