New York Governor Kathy Hochul delivered remarks in response to the attack on author Salman Rushdie when she visited the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.
“We have to call for an end to violence,” Hochul said to members of the public gathered in an outdoor auditorium. “Tolerance will always prevail over hate. Courage will always prevail over fear. And the pen will always prevail over the knife.”
After her speech, state police announced that they will be working with local authorities to increase security measures, including physical and digital surveillance.
Earlier on Sunday, Rushdie's agent confirmed that he was "on the road to recovery." He has been removed from a ventilator and is able to talk.
Rushdie’s 1988 book “The Satanic Verses” was banned in Iran, where the late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death. Khomeini died that same year.
Often-violent protests against Rushdie erupted around the world, including a riot that killed 12 people in Mumbai.
