Russian police raid monastery of COVID-denying renegade priest

Russian police have detained renegade priest Sergius, who locked himself inside a Russian convent in Central Urals several months ago.

Sergius is one of the most famous priests in the Urals. His public conflict with the Russian Orthodox Church began in the spring when he was banned from serving because of his radical views on the coronavirus pandemic.

In October, Patriarch Kirill excommunicated him from the church.

In June, Sergius, with the support of the Cossacks, seized the Sredneuralsky convent which he had founded and continued to hold services there.

Since the beginning of October, authorities have been investigating cases involving the torture of children in the Sredneuralsky monastery.
