U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in Washington, D.C., on Monday that the U.S. is “deeply concerned” for Alexei Navalny's wellbeing, after his allies said that not only has he been removed from the penal colony where he had been imprisoned since the middle of last year, but that his current whereabouts are unknown.

According to Miller, the U.S. has communicated to the Russian government that they are responsible for what happens to the Russian opposition politician.

“We have repeatedly joined Mr. Navalny's family, colleagues, supporters around the world in calling for his immediate release without conditions, and for the Russian government to end its continued repression of independent voices in Russia — who are subject to relentless harassment and intimidation for exercising their human rights,” Miller said.

According to Navalny spokesperson Kira Yarmysh, his aides have been preparing for his expected transfer to a "special regime" colony — the harshest grade in Russia's prison system — after he was sentenced in August to an additional 19 years in prison on top of more than the 11 years he was already serving. Yarmysh said that his location was currently unknown and that his lawyers have tried to reach him for the past six days.
