After the Shiveluch volcano launched ash into the air earlier this week in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, residents and work crews are trying to dig out villages from under several centimetres of the volcanic soot that stuck to buildings, vehicles and roads.

"The roads are completely terrible. It is very difficult to take the kids to kindergarten," said Klyuchi resident Vera Mayorova. "Pupils at schools are studying from home because it’s impossible to walk outside because of the ashfall."

Shiveluch is one of Russia's most active volcanoes and began erupting just after midnight on Tuesday and at its peak, about six hours after eruption, sent an ash cloud out over 108,000 square kilometres.

Seismologist Daniil Chebrov said on Wednesday that he expected the volcano to continue to erupt, though they would not likely be at the same size as the initial peak eruption.
