Russian rockets struck a shopping mall in central Ukraine on Monday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

At least 10 people were killed, and at least 40 were injured, Reuters has confirmed.

"It's useless to hope for decency and humanity from Russia," Zelenskyy wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

More than 1,000 people were in the Amstor mall at the time of the attack, according to Zelenskyy.

United Nations (UN) spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said they're concerned about the intensifying fighting in Ukraine and the attack on a shopping mall.

"It is deplorable, to say the least. Any sort of civilian infrastructure, which includes obviously shopping malls, and civilians should never ever be targeted," Dujarric told reporters.

Rescue efforts were ongoing into the evening, according to the Ukrainian president, adding that the shopping mall had “no strategic value” to Russian forces.
