Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday as he marked one year since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine that his country would not begin negotiations with Moscow until Russia ends its assault.
“Leave our territory — withdraw. Stop shelling us; stop killing civilians; stop destroying our infrastructure, energy sector, potable water,” he said. “Stop air strikes on the cities; stop killing dogs, cats— animals. Stop burning the forest. So, you go ahead and stop doing all of that and only after that we’ll tell you what form will be used to diplomatically put an end to it.”
Zelenskyy also weighed in on China’s proposed 12-step peace plan which he said included some points he said makes sense and “some things that I disagree with, the entire world I think disagrees with.”
China’s plan calls for an immediate end to violence in Ukraine and a return to dialogue. The 12-step plan also calls on countries to respect territorial boundaries, keep nuclear power plants safe, facilitate grain exports and stop unilateral sanctions.
Zelenskyy also spoke about his work shoring up support for Ukraine and said his country had not done an “adequate” job of building friendships before the war. “We didn’t have a strong fist of partners before the war …but now we have it,” he said.
