An emergency crew pulled a woman alive from the rubble of a building in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv struck by Russian missiles on Sunday.

The missiles targeted a residential building and the compound of a kindergarten, killing one person and wounding five more as Moscow stepped up its air strikes on Ukraine for a second day, officials said.

Up to four explosions shook central Kyiv in the early hours, in the first such attack on the city in weeks.

"We listened to the voices under the crash, and we know there are a couple of people inside," the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, told reporters. Separately, he also said that Sunday's strike had partially destroyed a nine-storey apartment building in the historic Shevchenkivskiy district of central Kyiv and caused a fire on the Telegram messaging app.

Russia has stepped up air strikes on Ukraine this weekend, which has also seen the fall of a strategic eastern city to pro-Russian forces.
