Finland’s ambassador was summoned by Russia’s foreign ministry on Thursday for their allegedly “anti-Russian” and “confrontational” political stance.

This policy is aimed at destruction of decades-long relations of mutually beneficial relations between “Finland and Russia,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine has prompted Finland to seek acceptance into NATO.

In response to this, Russia announced it was expelling nine Finnish diplomats on Thursday. Shortly after closing the Finnish consulate in St. Petersburg.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö has called Russia’s response "a harsh and unsymmetrical response to Finland's expulsion decisions.”
